Protect yourself if you're divorcing a narcissist

Divorce is a challenging process for anyone going through it, but things can be much worse when your ex is a narcissist. A person with this mental health condition focuses only on their own needs and desires. They do whatever it takes to get what they want, even if it comes at the expense of another person. This causes problems in the divorce because everything seems one-sided.

At the start of the divorce, you have to determine what strategy you are going to use to handle the narcissistic behavior. You need a divorce attorney who can fight for your rights against a ruthless person because your ex is likely going to try everything they can to hurt your chance of coming out of the divorce with anything.

Avoid arguing with your ex

Engaging your ex in arguments is never a good idea. They are going to nitpick every word you say and want to find ways to feel powerful. If you do disagree with something they say and let them know, they are going to push harder on that issue. For example, if you say that you want the marital home, they will fight to keep it even if they didn't want it at first.

Document everything

Keep track of everything related to the divorce. This includes any communication with your ex, bills you pay for marital assets or debts, and anything else that you think you might need to prove later. Narcissists like to play games, so they might change messages or make false claims against you so they can get their way. Having documentation for everything might seem like overkill, but that isn't the case when you are dealing with this situation.

Take care of your emotional health

Battling with a narcissist is tiring. Your physical and emotional health might suffer. Take time to yourself and find ways to get your mind off of the divorce. Consider going to therapy to help you cope with the mental health trauma.

Prepare for a lengthy divorce

In their quest to be in control, the narcissist will try to do anything they can to have things happen on their terms. They might not be willing to go through mediation or collaborative processes for divorce. This will delay the process and mean that you have to fight the battle in court. There isn't much you can do about this except prepare your side of the case and never let your ex see that the delays are affecting you. Above all, protect yourself during the legal battle.
