The divorce rate among people 50 and older is rising sharply

If you are approaching age fifty or have already crossed that milestone, you may find this information interesting. According to the Pew Research Center, the divorce rate among couples ages fifty or older is rising. In fact, these adults are divorcing at almost double the rate since the 1990s.

Looking forward to the next stage of your life may seem bleak if you do not get along with your current partner. Here are some of the reasons why more couples are splitting up later in life:

A desire to live fully

One contributing factor to more gray divorces is the fact that people are healthier and living longer. Due to the better chances of living for several more years, older people are feeling more of an entitlement to live life to the fullest. If you are unhappy in your marriage and potentially have several decades left in front of you, you may want to get a divorce so you can truly live.

No more kids

Couples spend a significant number of years raising children. When people have an empty nest, they may realize their home is not so fulfilling. Kids can be a distraction to what is otherwise a bland or contentious relationship.

Reduced stigma

Getting divorced used to be a huge deal; it was a decision that was frowned upon by religions and society at large. Today, breaking up your marriage does not carry nearly as much shame.

Multiple or shorter marriages

The same Pew Research Center report shows that gray divorce is more common among couples who have married several times or have been married for a fewer number of years. If you are in your second or third marriage by age fifty, you have a higher likelihood of getting a divorce.

These are just some interesting trends and statistics that may give you some interesting insight. However, if your marriage does end, you can take comfort in the fact that you are not alone.
